Walking Meditation and Yoga Retreat with Hart Lazer

27th April - 3rd May, 2026
Wakayama & Kyoto,  Japan

After experiencing many different yoga or sitting meditation retreats, are you ready to try an even more extraordinary yoga journey?

Next year, we invite you to join a retreat led by Hart Lazer, combining yoga practice with hiking, walking meditation, and deep yogic exploration. This retreat will take place in Japan, where we will walk the Nakahechi Route of the Kumano Kodo in Wakayama—one of only two pilgrimage routes in the world recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. After leaving Wakayama, we will continue to Kyoto to complete the final part of our yoga journey. This will no doubt be an unforgettable adventure of a lifetime!

Our journey begins in Shirahama Onsen. On the first day, you will arrive on your own and gather at the hot spring hotel for dinner and a good night’s rest. The next morning, we will take a bus to Takijiri-Oji, the starting point of the Nakahechi route on the Kumano Kodo. There, we will say goodbye to the modern world and enter the mountains.

Over three days, we will walk a total of 38.5 km (from Takijiri-Oji to Hongu Taisha). Each morning will start with a gentle asana practice to warm up the body before we begin hiking. Throughout the walk, Hart will guide us through three different meditation practices. Our chosen route—the Nakahechi Route, also known as the Imperial Route—is the most well-known trail in this region. The pilgrimage concludes at Nachii Taisha, after which we will make our way to Kyoto.

In Kyoto, each day begins with breakfast, followed by a 5-hour deep yoga practice and inquiry session led by Hart. After practice, you will have precious personal time to enjoy and savor this ancient and beautiful city.

We warmly invite you to join this perfect combination of meditation, hiking, yoga, onsen, Japanese culture, and travel.

Let’s go on a yoga journey together! Give yourself this beautiful gift in 2026!

Shirahama Onsen

Shirahama Onsen has 1300 years of history. It is famous not only as one of three oldest hot spring ("onsen") resorts in Japan but also as one of the most beautiful beach resorts in West Japan.

It is a mystery that hot springs exist in Shirahama Onsen though there is no volcano around the area. In 2000, Shirarahama Beach and Waikiki Beach (Honolulu, Hawaii, US) established a good will sister beach relationship.

Kyoto

In 794, Kyoto (then known as Heian-kyō) was chosen as the new seat of Japan's imperial court. The Emperors of Japan ruled from Kyoto in the following eleven centuries until 1869, when the court relocated to Tokyo.

Kyoto is considered the cultural capital of Japan and a major tourist destination. It is home to numerous Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, palaces and gardens, many of which are listed collectively by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Kumano Kodo

The Kumano Kodo is one of only two pilgrimage World Heritage Sites globally. Its history stretches back over a thousand years. For millennia the mountainous region of Kumano has been thought to be the mythical “holy ground where gods dwell.” During the Heian period (794 - 1185), the Imperial household and court made the 30 to 40 day arduous journey from the ancient capital of Kyoto to this remote area, in search of heaven on earth.

Katsuura Onsen

Katsuura Onsen is located on the southeast coast of the Kii Peninsula. It is in essence a fishing port turned hot spring resort. The most dominate landmark in Katsuura is the Hotel Urashima. It has the feel of an Onsen Disneyland or James Bond-like fortress and is located on an island-like peninsula in Katsuura Bay. There are seven baths scattered throughout the facility including one in a cave overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
